Is it time to cancel the British Royal Family? A lot of people are considering the treatment of Harry and Meghan to be the last straw and they are absolutely right. The British Monarchy no longer has any power except social power, but if they refuse to use that power for good, then the world should have no more use for them. The inability to absorb Meghan Markle into “The Firm” is harmful to the entire Commonwealth and reinforces white supremacy as a culture. It could have been different, but the Royal Family have squandered their last chance to remain relevant. It is unlikely the Royals will overcome this scandal, so let’s cancel the Monarchy once and for all.
In the old days, the masses used a guillotine. These days they just say “Get out. We’re done with the lot of you”. It is that easy, and thankfully, there is no need or thirst for violence. The British Monarchy would be gone already except that they made concession after concession, giving up all their power and autonomy until they are what they are today. A dysfunctional family trapped inside separate palaces, held hostage by the State and making a pretense that they remain relevant.
The problem is they won’t ever be relevant until they give up the worship of Britain’s imperialist past. Yes, that is exactly what the current form of British Monarchy continues to be–an awkward lament for the Empire that is lost. A pretence that British colonialism was good, rather than a cesspool of slavery, injustice and oppression.
Harry and Meghan are not special. They are just regular people. One was born a second son to the heir of the British throne, which is kind of a big deal–although in the end he is just a regular guy with a lot of money and privilege. The other was born to a working class American family. She is ambitious, in a good way, and made something of herself. She starred in a popular television show, authored a popular lifestyle blog, and managed to attract the love of a Prince. People like them both, or at least they used to.
His Royal Highness Prince Henry Charles Albert David of Wales, Duke of Sussex, Earl of Dumbarton, Baron Kilkeel, Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order–or something like that. No one really cares except for the tiny number of people directly involved with the British Monarchy and possibly some enthusiastic readers of historical romance novels. Importantly, this well-mannered and friendly Prince is 6th in line to the British throne, which means that he is 6th in line to become Head of State to 16 different nations. Whatever. It is just a face on the money of 35 separate countries. This Prince would prefer us to just call him Harry.
The chances of Harry actually becoming King are a big fat zero and from the sounds of it he is relieved. Not that he wouldn’t do his duty if it came to that. Poor Harry has been conditioned from birth to understand that he has just one job–be prepared to be a King if all your immediate relatives die. If he MUST become the personified symbol of the State, he will do it. He doesn’t want to make trouble. Not really. Everything was more or less okay for the ‘Spare Heir’ until he married Meghan Markle.
The Commonwealth was quite pleased with Harry’s choice of a bride
There are 54 countries in the Commonwealth , but there are just 16 that continue to observe the British Monarch as Head of State. These include the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, The Bahamas, Belize, Grenada, Jamaica, Papua New Guinea, Saint Lucia, Solomon Islands, St Kitts and Nevis, St Vincent and the Grenadines. There were a lot more in the past, but time marches on in a way that leaves Kings and Queens behind. Barbados plans to jump ship in November of 2021.
When Harry announced that he wanted to marry Meghan, it was seen as a special opportunity to strengthen the relationship between the Crown and the Commonwealth. The hard working and enthusiastic Meghan Markle was keen to represent Queen Elizabeth II as a Commonwealth ambassador. Keep in mind that ‘Her Majesty’ was also keen on Meghan. Since he is 6th in line to the Throne, Prince Harry was required to receive the Queen’s permission to marry Meghan, which really means he had to receive the permission of the British Government. In the past, several Royals have been denied permission to marry who they chose, including Edward VIII, Prince Charles, Princess Margaret, and even the Father of Queen Victoria.
Everyone was on board about Meghan, presumably, because they believed many of the citizens of the Commonwealth would see themselves reflected in the pretty new wife of Prince Harry. Although countless white people who disapprove of Meghan will dishonestly claim that they had no idea that Meghan is bi-racial, the citizens of the Commonwealth (and former Commonwealth countries) noticed–and they liked it.
“On a personal note, may I just say that while I am here with my husband as a member of the royal family, I want you to know that for me, I am here as a mother, as a wife, as a woman, as a woman of color and as your sister,” she said as the crowd cheered.Meghan Markle during a visit to the former Commonwealth nation of South Africa
Meghan was popular with the people of Britain
Wait, what? You heard that the British people hated Meghan? Well, yes, there are a lot of British people that have complained about Meghan and her “lack of class”, her “unkempt hair”, her “inability to look the part” and various other dog whistles. This is not the whole of British people, however. The 2011 census determined that 40.2% of the residents of London identified as Asian, Black, Mixed, or Other. As a representative of the Queen, Meghan’s focus on the diverse population of Britain served as a bridge to marginalized citizens.
Sadly, it made some people uncomfortable that the Royal Family, which should reflect the people and values of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth, was now actually reflecting the people and values of the Commonwealth. The horror!
The backlash from the media and from social media trolls was fierce and uncalled for. It makes one wonder what the values of Britain actually are. Oh yes, we remember. The values of Britain have traditionally been the values of imperialism and racist colonialism. Still, this was the chance for Britain to renew itself and become a more just society. Unfortunately, there was an inability for certain people to rise to the occasion.
The news media are complicit
By now, everyone has heard of how bullying from the Press was so severe that Meghan became suicidal. Frankly, it would have been difficult to wake up every morning to horrific lies about you in the newspapers, and to be unable to say or do anything about it. Imagine one of “the men in grey suits”, as Diana referred to them, smugly handing you a newspaper that said unspeakable things about you. Every single day. For years.
“So there’s the family, and then there’s the people that are running the institution,” Meghan said. “Those are two separate things. And it’s important to be able to compartmentalize that, because the Queen, for example, has always been wonderful to me.”USA Today
What type of things were in the press? We all saw them. They were the hottest stories in town. Somewhere out there, people made a lot of cash on these relentless tabloid stories. Overwhelmingly, these stories were thinly veiled racist attacks, and despite that, even the more respected press outlets were willing to carry them.
The abuse was sudden and sharp. The tabloids reveled in the idea that Meghan was ‘black’. Was she from the ‘hood? Were her ancestors slaves? Enquiring minds demanded to know and the tabloids dished it up into a neat package, even digging up Meghan’s pedigree. Importantly, the message was meant to convey that Meghan was an endless number of stations below Prince Harry.
While Queen Victoria sat on the throne, Empress to a quarter of the world’s population, a woman named Mattie Turnipseed gave birth to a ‘mulatto’ — the ugly, official term to describe those of mixed race — baby girl in a corner of America’s Deep South. The Daily Mail comparing Meghan Markle’s ancestor to Queen Victoria
Then came the constant microaggressions about Meghan’s habits. When Kate eats an avocado it is virtuous and in service to her role as a mother. When Meghan eats an avocado, it is all about what a woke hypocrite she is. In truth, this messaging is less about Meghan and Kate than it is about what each woman represents. Kate is a symbol of the traditional role of submissive women whose husbands provide for them, but Meghan is the contemporary sort of woman with a history of providing for herself. Now ask yourself why Kate has been getting all the good press and Meghan is getting all the abuse. Kate is old Britain, but Meghan is new Britain
Social media trolls on the attack
A major driver behind all of this is social media. Piers Morgan is likely the most high profile Meghan bully of them all and he is relentless. How much of a fixated person does one have to be to find pictures where Meghan wears something similar to Wallis Simpson? Pretty fixated. Morgan’s rude tweets about Meghan are constantly trending. Globally. More than a few of his rants concern his disappointment that they went out for a drink once and then she ghosted him.
While Piers Morgan is truly despicable and able to spread his message far and wide due to both his position within the British Media and his international recognition, it is the small time haters that seem to have done the most damage. Entire online communities have sprung up with the sole purpose of expressing hate for Meghan. Platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram all contain small armies of trolls who wish nothing but harm toward Meghan. The notorious 4Chan and 8Chan message boards were inhabited by anonymous Meghan bashers that spun wild conspiracies out of whole cloth. It must have been frustrating when these conspiracies were picked up by the Press and peddled as news.
Not only have the Meghan trolls posted racist and misogynistic material about Meghan that is inappropriate to repeat, but these trolls pushed a conspiracy theory that Meghan had faked her pregnancy. There were even more sinister claims that Meghan had a plan to kill Kate and her family so that she might become Queen herself. As always, the tabloids were happy to pursue these ‘rumors’. Stories such as “Meghan made Kate cry” and “Meghan’s choice of wedding flowers put Princess Charlotte’s life in danger” are related to these themes.
The thing about the Meghan trolling is that it has been discovered that most of the vile posts originate from just 20 Twitter accounts. That’s right. All the bizarre conspiracy theories and hate-filled lies come from just 20 accounts that post anti-Meghan vitriol around the clock–for years. Who are these people? No one knows, but they have been very effective. A story from any of these accounts routinely ended up on the front page of a tabloid. If you were Meghan, you would be stressed out as well.
Of course, not all the bullying comes from Trolls. Various media personalities have gone the extra mile to be racially abusive to Prince Harry’s family. One of the most obvious examples is BBC personality Danny Baker who was fired after tweeting a racist attack on newborn Archie.
The tweet, which he later deleted but which has been circulated on social media, showed an image of a couple holding hands with a chimpanzee dressed in clothes with the caption: “Royal Baby leaves hospital”.BBC News
Imagine the horror experienced by Harry and Meghan to see such an attack on their new baby from someone who worked for the BBC. At that time, and probably now as well, the Sussexes were facing death threats, and Baker’s ‘joke’ likely terrified them. Additionally, we have now learned that ‘The Firm’ had decided that Archie was not to be provided with security. Despite being 7th in line to the Throne, Archie is expected to go it alone, come what may. Why? And to be clear–this is the type of decision made by the government, not the Royal Family itself.
Meghan’s family piled on relentlessly
To make matters worse, the tabloids dug up all of Meghan’s ex-friends and estranged relatives and found the most talkative people in the history of the gutter press. Imagine asking your family NOT to talk to the press, but all they do is talk to the press about stuff that everyone with half a brain realizes is paid content?
The saddest part of it all is how little cash it took to buy off Markle’s family. That would be enough to put anyone into a state of depression.
“Just to give people a snapshot of how it really was — if I do one interview and they pay me $1,500, 10,000 publications will copy that and write their own story, that’s how it works,” she said.Samantha Markle
Thomas Markle Sr., reportedly scored a $9,000 payout for an appearance on Good Morning Britain in which he slammed the Royal Family, even claiming that the late Princess Diana would be ashamed of how the British Royals were treating his daughter’s extended family.Pop Culture
You thought your family was bad? Just wait until you come into fame and fortune, then you will truly know how mean your relatives can be. Actually, the one big thing that Harry and Meghan’s families have in common is that they each despise one another and do not seem afraid to show it.
Being Royal made the lives of Harry and Meghan a living hell
By January of 2020 it was very clear that things were not okay, especially as Harry and Meghan were hiding out in Canada. Hounded by the tabloids, dealing with terrorist threats, fearing the loss of their security, and experiencing severe mental anguish, Harry and Meghan quit their jobs as senior royals. It was what the bullies had kept telling them to do until they actually did it. Then, they became villains twice over. The attacks intensified and their families reportedly abandoned them, cutting Harry and Meghan loose to save themselves. Sadly, Harry claims that his father stopped taking his calls. They fled to California where they were sheltered by Tyler Perry.
Phrases included “self-loathing race traitor”, “trailer trash”, “meghan the queen, of monkey island”, “the woke Meghan bint” and “poisonous cow”. Markle was also described as a “bitch”, “c*nt”, “whore”, “slut” and “witch”, among other terms.Examples of tweets directed at Meghan after the announcement to ‘step back’.
Throughout all of this, ‘The Firm’ and the Royal Family said nothing to help. There was no public rebuke of racist attitudes, no denials of outlandish stories, and no protection. Until the day of the Oprah interview, ‘The Firm’ continued to release negative stories about Meghan and her supposed penchant to bully Palace staff. Post interview, the attacks from ‘The Firm” keep coming, and the Royal Family are reportedly “concerned”. Incidentally, the abusive social media attacks are just as bad as ever. Piers Morgan is right outraged!
Imagine if the Royal Family had done the right thing and stood up against racism? The Queen did make some attempts to point out that Harry and Meghan were still “much loved” members of the family, but clearly her subjects did not take that seriously enough to stop the abuse. What if Prince Charles, who has far more freedom to speak, had put his foot down? Why couldn’t Prince William support his brother?
We know why. They said nothing because the first and foremost role of today’s monarchy is to perpetuate the status quo of white supremacy–the greatness of the British Empire over former colonies and a whisper of a dead, but inglorious past. Maybe they thought for a minute that Meghan would extend their relevance in the contemporary world, but they apparently were unable to take the journey required. The machine is calibrated to resist change and this is unacceptable. Ultimately, the Queen broke her promise to the Commonwealth, and for this, she will likely become Elizabeth the Last.
