Many people seem to be celebrating the fact that Trump has tested positive for Covid-19. It is understandable because Trump has been a terrible President. The United States have been in chaos since the moment he was elected, and the situation only gets worse. Trump catching Covid-19, however, is not actually good news. It is a disaster that should have been avoided.
Only days before testing positive, Trump mocked Biden for wearing a mask. It was the latest act of incompetency and negligence from a President who revels in his ability to lead America through a crisis.
‘It’s going to disappear. One day it’s like a miracle – it will disappear’Trump
Since the global coronavirus pandemic began, Trump has downplayed the seriousness of the situation. He has pushed aside medical professionals and inserted himself into their roles as communicators of health information. Trump has called the virus a hoax, claimed that the virus would simply disappear, promoted unproven therapeutics that were later found to be harmful, suggested that doctors might be able to inject disinfectants and UV light into the bodies of infected patients, showed little concern for the high numbers of infected and dead, and most of the time, indicated that he was too macho to wear a mask.
Trump held rallies where people were crammed together to make the crowd look larger. He screamed at governors to re-open their economies and for children to return to school, because after all, only the elderly died and children are almost immune. Neither claim is true, but getting people back to work and school was more important to Trump than those same people getting sick or dying.
“We have it totally under control. It’s one person coming in from China, and we have it under control. It’s going to be just fine.”Trump
So now that Trump has tested positive, there is a certain measure of schadenfreude at the news, but that sentiment will not last long. If Trump becomes unable to perform his duties, the Presidency must pass, to Pence. If Pence tests positive for Covid (and he very well might), and he too becomes incapacitated, the Presidency must be passed to Nancy Pelosi.
we have to get those states open. It’s hurting people. It’s hurting people far more than the disease itself.Trump
In normal times, that line of succession would be adequate, but these are not normal times. Will the Trump Administration admit it if Trump becomes incapacitated? Will they admit it if Pence does? Will power be transferred peacefully to Pelosi? These are important questions worth asking.
If we didn’t test, we wouldn’t have cases. You would have no cases. Other countries, they don’t test; they don’t have cases.Trump
Never before has the security and social order of the United States been so fragile. Just the reality that Trump himself has been infected with Covid-19 is chilling. How much of the Administration and staff has been exposed? How many people in the White House can become ill before the Executive Branch unable to function?
“It affects virtually nobody,”Trump
Trump did not contract Covid-19 in a vacuum. Everyone around him, including many Senators, have been exposed. The entire national leadership could all become ill at the same time. It is a disaster of unprecedented proportions.
Open your schools, everybody. Open your schools.Trump
Sadly, all of this is of Trump’s making. Hopefully, Trump will survive this calamity, the election will proceed, and Trump will retire to Mar-a-Lago to live out his days. This is not a crisis that anyone needs.
