Ruth Bader Ginsburg has died, and the Republicans better not try to replace her with Ted Cruz. Cruz has claimed that he doesn’t want the job, though. Hopefully that is not false modesty. It might be that Cruz was mentioned simply to keep the focus off the nominee that Trump truly wants.

“I want to be in the political fight,” Cruz explained. “I want to be fighting to nominate and confirm three, four, five principled constitutionalist justices, but that’s not where I want to serve. I want to stay fighting right where I am in the US Senate.”
Ted Cruz
We all know that Ted Cruz’s big dream is to become President. Unfortunately, he was born in Canada, and that seems to be a problem for him, especially with all the Republican reliance on ‘birther’ narratives.
There are still PLENTY of other Trump sycophants that are lined up for the job. Perhaps the most notorious is Senator Tom Cotton. Cotton is all about overturning Roe v. Wade, protecting gun rights, and sticking it to China. OH! and torture. Tom Cotton came out as pro-torture in 2016. Trump doesn’t actually care about those things, but he panders to those who do.

Senator Tom Cotton has not been so humble. Instead, he has eagerly suggested that he: “will always heed the call of service to the nation”. That’s is not all, Tom Cotton has made it clear that he wants Roe v. Wade overturned.
The main problem with these nominations is that that nominees should be intellectuals that are well-educated in constitutional law, and have a background working in constitutional law. Nominees are not supposed to be chosen for their willingness to act as sycophants for politicians. They are not supposed to make decisions based on the political ideology du jour.
Supreme court Justices are expected to rule based on their convictions that are based on the interpretation of law. They are not there to make sure the Executive Branch gets to do whatever they want.
Behind closed doors, it would not be surprising if Trump had asked if he could nominate Judge Jeanine. Um. Yeah. She probably wouldn’t do any more damage than Tom Cotton would.
