What a day! Everyone is in a frenzy because Bob Woodward released audio of Trump describing how bad Covid-19 would be. Now, there is indisputable proof that Trump chose to downplay the danger. Without a hint of concern in his voice, Trump told Woodward that Covid-19 was airborne and that it was likely that a lot of people would die. Is this really a surprise?
Before today, there was lively debate about whether Trump was too stupid and incompetent to deal with the global pandemic, or if he was purposely allowing the illness to run its course through the population. We now have an answer. What is most difficult to understand, however, is why Trump so freely rambled on to Bob Woodward?
Bob Woodward is a big deal. He was the guy who broke the Watergate story. Robert Redford played Woodward in the movie “All the President’s Men”, which was written by Woodward and Carl Bernstein about the Watergate scandal. Woodward was also very close to George W. Bush and wrote four books about Him. His close connections to high ranking Republicans is likely why Trump thought he could speak so freely to Woodward.
In fact, we might all wonder why it took Bob Woodward so long to spill the beans. The current claim is that Trump, Woodward, and Lindsey Graham were all present during the first interview. That means that Woodward and Graham have known all of these months that Trump was purposely concealing the truth about Covid-19. Why didn’t they tell anyone sooner? At the very least, why didn’t Graham complain to his colleagues in the Senate? Why did Woodward not immediately break the news when he witnessed Trump telling Americans that “Covid-19 was a hoax” and that it was “just the sniffles”?
People died that might not have.
The fact that so many people sat on this information and said nothing is what is the most surprising. Are Republicans so intent on keeping Trump in power that they will let people die instead of stopping him? What, exactly, is Trump doing for them? What is Trump doing that Pence couldn’t do?
For four long years, Trump has left only destruction in his wake. Instead of ending everyone’s misery, the Republican Senators have decided to work against their own interests and have kept Trump in power. To quote Trump: “what’s in it for them?”
