Did you know that kids can go to school because they do not catch or transmit Covid-19? This is what Trump told the world today, but it is not true.
Children over the age of 10 spread Covid-19 as much as adults do. Don’t discount the kids younger than 10, however. They spread Covid-19 HALF as much as adults do. That is better, but still bad.
MIS-C is a condition where different body parts can become inflamed, including the heart, lungs, kidneys, brain, skin, eyes, or gastrointestinal organs. There have so far been six deaths related to the syndrome nationwide, according to health officials.CTV NEWS
It is true that children are less likely to die from Covid-19 than adults are. That is good news. Even in Italy, where the overall Covid-19 death rate was 14%, it was highly unlikely for infected children to die.
This might be the point of it all. Trump has decided that the risk to the economy outweighs the risk to the numbers of people that will actually die from Covid-19. He is thinking in big numbers, rather than about real people. What is real is that over 140,000 real Americans have died so far. Apparently, they were expendable.
There is a huge gap between being really sick with Covid-19 and actually dying from Covid-19. It is not an all or nothing sort of thing. Plus, as it is with everyone, the most vulnerable children, the ones that are impacted by poverty and poor health are the ones that are the most at risk for death.
Many Covid-19 survivors experience lingering severe symptoms for months after recovering from the infection. This is because Covid-19 can cause damage to the lungs, kidneys, liver, heart, brain, and various other organs. It is definitely not the ‘sniffles’. These are early days and it is impossible to know how long term these long term effects will truly be.
Of course, the highest risk remains for the elderly. Listening to Trump’s comments, we could not help but get the impression that he was dismissing the effects of Covid-19, again, because it hurts elderly people the most.
The thing that Trump got right is that the Covid-19 pandemic is going to get worse before it gets better. This is just the first wave.
