I am not an advocate for frequent changes in laws and constitutions. But laws and institutions must go hand in hand with the progress of the human mind. As that becomes more developed, more enlightened, as new discoveries are made, new truths discovered and manners and opinions change, with the change of circumstances, institutions must advance also to keep pace with the times. We might as well require a man to wear still the coat which fitted him when a boy as civilized society to remain ever under the regimen of their barbarous ancestors.Thomas Jefferson
Do you know this quote? Its inscribed on the Jefferson Memorial. Do you know what Jefferson is saying? He is arguing that times change. People get woke. That humanity is on a path forward and that we need to respect that by changing our laws and institutions to fit with all the new knowledge and wokeness that we have accumulated.
What does that mean? Well for one, it means the Constitution of the United States needs to be amended as we get smarter. As we all know, its been amended fairly frequently. For example, the Thirteenth Amendment of 1865 that prohibited involuntary servitude and abolished slavery. More than 150 years later, some people continue to argue about this. Or the Fifteenth Amendment of 1870, that prohibits the denial of the right to vote for former slaves and people of color. More than 150 years later, the black vote continues to be suppressed.
The ideas of White Supremacy have become institutionalized in American (and other) cultures. That doesn’t mean that it has to stay that way. People can change their beliefs and behavior. They can institutionalize anti-racist ideologies that are inclusive of all citizens. Giving rights to one group does not take rights away from another, no matter how afraid the dominant group is that this could happen.
Black people have the natural right to exist, and it is about time that our leaders start telling black people that their lives matter. There has been a week of peaceful protests and also riots and looting. There has been increasing violence from the police toward the protesters. Yet, instead of a soothing and calm voice from the White House, we just see increasing invective. With each day, it seems apparent that President Trump does not want the rioting to end. He just keeps provoking more violence.
Trump incites violence when he invites his MAGA crowd to the White House demonstrations. He incites violence when he Tweets out that Democratic governors and Mayors are weak and that if they do not suppress protesters, that he will take over and suppress them himself. Trump incites violence when he screams that reporters critical of his policies and actions are FAKE NEWS! Who gave the order to shoot at journalists? Who gave the order to shoot rubber bullets and tear gas at residents that are trying to put out the fires?
As the days wear on, and tensions escalate, officials are claiming that White Nationalists are taking advantage of the protests to work on their own goals. In Pennsylvania, the Lancaster police chief has claimed there is credible evidence that White Nationalists were working to agitate the protesters and were attacking the police. In Nashville, a white man has been arrested for setting fire to the courthouse. In Minnesota, State Officials received information that White Nationalists had come to stir up trouble, but the response from the White House was that this intelligence was fake news and that weak Democrats and far left extremist groups were to blame. In the next breath, Trump declared that Antifa would be designated as domestic terrorists. Blacks fear that the violence will be blamed on them.
Fisher recalled parishoners calling him with news of the fire Sunday evening. He told MacCallum that he and his wife visited the church early Monday and were thankful the only room burned was a newly-renovated part of the nursery.
“It was just one room that had been recently renovated and it was not one of the irreplaceable historic parts of the space. I was so grateful for that,” he said.
“And I’m very mindful that those people who did this — it may have been one person, I don’t know who it was — I think it is really important to say that person does not represent the majority of the people that are out there peacefully protesting with an important message.”
In closing, Fisher thanked the public for their outpouring of support, and added that America must continue to look past the violence and concentrate on the “message of fighting racism as a country.”
“That is the only way that we are going to have healing and progress.”Fox News
Let’s keep in mind that whatever happens tonight. All Trump had to do was lead the nation by proclaiming that Black Lives Matter and that he would work to stop police brutality. He could have carried an executive order into the Rose Garden and proclaimed that he was going to do something about about bad cops that misuse their power. Trump might have even bolstered his declaration by invoking Thomas Jefferson and stating that it was time to change America for the better and that this would be done by putting away racist notions of the past that are better suited to barbarism than democracy. We can see what coat Trump has chosen to wear.
