Trump wants the economy open as soon as possible and that includes sending the kids back to school.
“These are young students. They’re in great shape,” he said, going on to suggest the benefits outweigh the risks for higher education institutions.”Will something happen? Perhaps,” Trump said. “You can be driving to school and some bad things can happen too.”CNN
Alongside the pressure to re-open the economy, Covid-19 cases continue to increase. Public health officials such as Fauci seem to be struggling to get their message across about the risks associated with ending physical distancing measures.
The risks from the increasing spread of Covid-19 are now pitted against political interests that are eager to see the damaged global economy recover quickly. This has led to many people questioning the science behind the pandemic modeling. Senator Rand Paul challenged Dr Fauci directly about Fauci’s reluctance to agree that it is safe to for children to return to school.
Fauci, however, is determined to clearly define the risks:
“My concern that if some areas — cities, states or what have you — jump over those various checkpoints and prematurely open up, without having the capability of being able to respond effectively and efficiently, my concern is we will start to see little spikes that might turn into outbreaks,” Fauci said in testimony before the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee.”There is a real risk that you will trigger an outbreak that you may not be able to control, which in fact, paradoxically, will set you back, not only leading to some suffering and death that could be avoided but could even set you back on the road to try to get economic recovery,” Fauci later added.CNN
Some may be pinning their hopes on the idea that a vaccine will be ready by the start of the 2020/2021 school year, but Dr Fauci has told the Senate that this goal remains “a bridge too far“.
In the midst of this controversy, dozens of children diagnosed with Covid-19 are presenting with symptoms that resemble Kawasaki disease and toxic shock syndrome. Doctors are now referring to the unique set of symptoms that affect some children with Covid-19 as pediatric multi-system inflammatory syndrome.
