Prisoners in El Salvador are being crowded together despite the risk of infection from Covid-19. Nearly nude and with shaved heads, row upon row of inmates are forced to huddle together on the prison floor. In a response to the coronavirus pandemic, the President of El Salvador has authorized lethal force against gang members, and has ordered rival gang members to be held together in the same cells. These prison cells are then barricaded with metal or plywood to ensure that all sunlight is blocked. The reason behind these measures, El Salvador claims, is that the gangs are taking advantage of the pandemic and ordering violence from inside the prisons. Human Rights violations in El Salvadoran prisons have been condemned by the U.S. Department of State.
